Mothers Preparing for Divorce

Last year I went through a divorce with my then husband of 15 years. Right now I'm currently browsing the self help sections at the bookstore for advice and support for divorced women, but this is far easier than planning for a divorce with men. When I first received the divorce papers I was floored. I had been a stay at home mother for most of our marriage and I simply did not expect to suddenly be a single mother with no job experience. It was very difficult, but I learned some valuable lessons along the way that I'll share with you now as you prepare for your divorce.

·         Gather all of your important paperwork and documents dating back to the very beginning of your marriage. Tax information, assets, joint bank accounts etc.
·         If you have children they will be your most important asset. Many other rewards often follow who wins a child custody battle. Make sure you act in a devoted and responsible manner to your children first and the court will look kindly upon you.
·         The law differs in every state regarding divorce, but you can find very helpful legal advice online. Free consultations with law firms both online and in person is normal and routine. You can speak with several before deciding on which one best suits your needs.

Let's get started

Preparing for a divorce is so important. This preparation starts well before you ever step foot in a law office. Create a paper trail of important documents dating back to the beginning of your marriage. Since I hadn't been working for many years it was important for me to know for sure how much my spouse was making monthly and yearly. Getting this information before a separation can be tricky, but getting it afterward is very difficult. By acting quickly and gathering as much information about yourself and your spouse's assets and income you can be better prepared when it comes time to meet with a divorce attorney for women.
Start looking for legal advice online. You can start with general questions, but eventually you will want to narrow your questions down to the divorce laws in the state you reside. By educating yourself a little on what your local laws are you will have a better understanding of how to approach your consultations with attorneys
.
Start making the phone calls

You can often find websites that offer free advice in the form of web chats, but now is the time to start making phone calls and set up appointments with law firms. Bring the documents you've collected along with you and speak with several different attorneys. The more information you can provide them about your lives and marriage the better they can serve you throughout your divorce.
